Rajeev Ranjan was born in India. He received the master’s degree in engineering physics from the
National Institute of Technology Warangal, Warangal, India, in 2011. He joined Siemens Corporate
Research and Technologies, Bangalore, India, as an Intern. Then, he joined the ISRO, India (Indian
Space Research Organization, Laboratory of Electro Optics System), where he was engaged in
research on the applied optics area. There he was responsible for the fabrication of bulk optics for
space applications. Here he was also responsible for the interferometric test of the surface figure
accuracy of the space borne optics. He gains an experience on working with Fizeau Interferometer
for testing flatness and surface accuracy at ISRO. He also put on his hand experience on the optical
system design using different optical designing tools (Zemax, Code-V).
In 2014 he joined the Department of Engineering, University of Naples “Parthenope” Naples, Italy,
where his research focused on electric arc discharge technique used for the fabrication of Long
Period Gratings Sensors in different kinds of optical fibers. In this project, he was responsible for
fabrication of Long Period Gratings Sensors in different kinds of optical fibers starting from
standard Corning SMF, specialty fibers and to the new generation solid core photonic crystal fiber.
Sensors fabricated by him have been applied for real time gaseous sensing at Italian Railways. His
sensors tested for gamma radiation sensitivity in collaboration with European labs (National
Institute for Laser Plasma and Radiation Physics) under Prof. Sporea. These sensors went under the
radiation test. His research resulted in several conferences presentations and journal publications
including in Nature Publications (Scientific Reports), Photonics Technology letters.
